The U.S. Senate’s Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee recently published a rather eye-opening report outlining how a series of barriers have served to keep at least one out of every three disabled people living in poverty.
The report, which surveyed over 400 disabled Americans over the summer, determined that twice as many disabled people live in poverty as non-disabled people, while less than 30 percent of disabled people of working-age are active members of the U.S. workforce versus 78 percent of non-disabled people.
The report theorizes that everything from limited housing and a lack of access to transportation to discrimination and low pay are to blame for this phenomenon. Indeed, some of the survey participants indicated that they openly fear securing employment, as it will disqualify them from access to much-needed services.
Another unfortunate aspect that was not addressed in the report is that many otherwise disabled people who are in the process of seeking to secure Social Security disability benefits after an initial denial of their application may not feel as if they can afford health care.
