Mental illnesses can be just a serious as physical ones

When a person in Houston suffers a physical disability like blindness, or an injury like a broken leg, other people can easily understand how the disabled or injured person might not be able to function in everyday life the same way that other people can. For example, people who suffer from physical disabilities and injuries might not be able to work. For this reason, they may seek Social Security disability benefits, and it is no mystery why they need these benefits. On the other hand, when a person suffers from a mental illness, his or her problems might not be as obvious to the outside world.

Some mental conditions are no less serious and life-altering than are physical disabilities. For example, mental illnesses like depression and bipolar disorder can take hold of a person and completely rob them of a normal everyday life. People in these situations may not be able to care for themselves properly or do things like hold down a steady job. For this reason, many people who suffer from certain mental illnesses also seek Social Security disability benefits.

At our Houston-based law firm, we know that a mental illness can be a dire situation for the person going through it, and for their loved ones. We also understand that getting the person the benefits and help they need is essential for them to be able to live a more normal and fruitful life.

If a person has a qualifying mental condition, that person and their family should understand what they need to do to get SSD benefits for mental disability. Our firm's website has a wealth of information about Social Security and applying for benefits.

Just because the outside world might not understand, or has a misperception about certain mental illnesses, does not mean that the person who suffers from that disability doesn't deserve to get the help they need. We can help people in this situation through all phases of the Social Security process, including appealing a denied claim.
