An overview of the application process for SSD benefits

The Social Security Administration reports that individuals in the U.S. have a 30 percent chance of becoming disabled prior to retirement age. Social security disability benefits can provide help for disabled individuals and their families in the Houston area. There are a variety of different options for disabled individuals to consider. While SSD is based on work history, other options, such as Supplemental Security Income, may be available when the sufficient work history is not present.

Social Security disability eligibility includes both medical condition requirements and work history requirements. Disability is generally defined as an inability to perform gainful work because of a medical condition that is expected to last longer than 12 months or result in death. Evaluators determine eligibility based on medical records submitted by the applicant and work credits. The work credit requirements vary based on when the disability occurred and when the credits were earned.

Two-thirds of all applications for SSD benefits are initially denied. When a claim has been denied, however, the applicant has 60 days to appeal the denial. Once an application is approved, the applicant can receive cash and other benefits, as well as other benefits depending on the circumstances, following a waiting period.

Social Security disability benefits are important for many disabled individuals and their families. The application process can seem complicated and arduous which is why it is helpful to have thorough knowledge and proper guidance throughout the process. An experienced Social Security disability law firm can provide much-needed help and increase the chances of a successful application or appeal.
