How we can help when your doctor gives you unwelcome news

On Behalf of | Nov 18, 2014 | Social Security Disability Benefits for Illness

If you were to ask people what medical condition they feared the most, there’s a very good chance that the majority of people would have the same one-word answer: cancer.

This makes sense when you stop to consider just how debilitating and just how deadly cancer can be. Indeed, statistics show that cancer is currently the leading cause of death among people between 40 and 70 years of age.

Fortunately, unlike many other medical conditions, there are certain steps a person can take to help reduce their risk of developing cancer now or later in life.

Consider some simple tips found in the recently released European Code against Cancer:

  • Stop using tobacco in any form, especially cigarettes.
  • Limit alcohol consumption with an average of two drinks daily for men and one drink daily for women.
  • Keep weight low by eating right and exercising regularly.
  • Reduce exposure to UV light.
  • Participate in cancer screenings.

As sound as this advice is, the reality is that people are often diagnosed with cancer despite their best efforts to remain healthy.

When this happens, it’s important for people to understand that if their condition or, in some cases, the cancer treatment itself (radiation, chemotherapy, surgery, etc.) prevents them from working that they have viable options available to them, including Social Security disability benefits.

While you may have heard horror stories about SSD benefits being next to impossible to secure, this is not the case. Indeed, our firm has the skill and experience needed to prove to the Social Security Administration that lung cancer, leukemia, brain tumors or any other type of cancer has made working an impossibility.
