People with MS may qualify for SSD benefits for illness

| Aug 11, 2016 | Social Security Disability Benefits for Illness

Doctors and scientists are constantly striving to find new ways to fight and cure complex illnesses. Multiple sclerosis is one such disease that continues to perplex people in the medical field. Although treatments and medicine are available, scientists do not yet fully understand what causes MS. Thus, they do not have any kind of cure for it.

People in Houston who know someone that has MS probably understand that it has unpredictable effects on people. The disease causes interference between the brain and other parts of the body, and for some people who suffer from it, MS is disabling. People who have MS may suffer from a wide variety of symptoms including fatigue, difficulty walking, chronic pain and many other potentially debilitating problems.

Because MS can have such a profound effect on a person’s ability to carry out normal everyday tasks, the disease may leave a person disabled for purposes of working a steady job. Accordingly, the Social Security Administration recognizes MS as an impairment. This means that people who suffer from MS may be able to qualify for Social Security Disability benefits.

According to the National MS Society, roughly 40 percent of all people in the country who have MS receive some kind of disability insurance benefits. Not all of those people are necessarily relying on SSD benefits for illness because some may have different forms of private insurance. However, for many people, SSD benefits are the best available option.

Anyone in the Houston area who has MS, or some similar condition, which makes them unable to work and earn a living, should research whether they meet the federal regulations to qualify for SSD benefits. Furthermore, those people who need help with securing benefits can rely on an experienced Social Security attorney.
