When is a disability lump sum pay awarded?

On Behalf of | Nov 7, 2019 | Social Security Disability

Despite some Houston residents’ best intentions, they are just no longer able to work due to an illness or injury. When this occurs, a person may be eligible for Social Security Disability. These benefits can be incredibly helpful for a family who relies on this income to get by.

But those who are familiar with the Social Security Disability system understand that there can be a long delay that can occur between the initial application and an eventual approval.

Those who apply initially for Social Security Disability can expect a delay in receiving benefits for up to six months. But there are others who have to appeal a Social Security Disability decision and, in these cases, it can take a year or more to receive benefits. Once a person is approved for Social Security Disability they can receive back benefits going back to the date a person applied for the benefits. In order to receive the full amount due for backpay, Social Security will look at the date the person became unable to work and if that date is before the date filed for disability, then a person can receive up to 12 months of retroactive benefits.

Social Security Disability can be a complicated matter for many Houston area residents. Calculating and receiving back pay can be an important matter that should be addressed by a legal professional who specializes in Social Security Disability. An attorney can meet with their client and go through the options they have for applying for disability or to help appeal a claim that has been denied. An attorney understands that their clients may have many legal options and will work hard to make sure they receive the benefits to which they are entitled.

When a person is injured and no longer able to work it can be difficult for a family. Social Security Disability can be income that helps a family during this difficult time.
